Chapter 4
A hint of confusion flashed in Leonard''s eyes.
In his memory, I had always been a strong woman.
Even after fainting for no reason and waking up covered in wounds, I would always smile and tell him not to worry, assuring him everything was fine.
"With her personality, how could she be willing to give up her own life, especially after we had a child? In the three years of marriage, she never caused me trouble, always shouldering everything herself. Did she think she was a burden to me?" he thought.
Leonard made up his mind that from then on, he would never lie to me again, claiming that my fainting was a side effect of excessive blood loss.
He would hold flowers and tell me that my body had fully healed.
Sensing Leonard''s hesitation, Zoe grew impatient. "Doctor, while the vitality is still there, let''s take the umbilical cord blood!
"Leonard, Alicia values her life a lot. She definitely wouldn''t sign that form. She''s just acting like this to make you feel sorry for her. I''m going to a show tomorrow and need to look radiant. I can''t afford to be humiliated for your sake."
With her reminder, Leonard suddenly recalled that I had signed the document at the reception.
And at that time, his mind had been full of...
As the umbilical cord blood was drawn, the heart monitor went flat, and two lives immediately left him.
He staggered and leaned against the wall. He had to calm down. There must be a way to reverse this.
"Wow! Hurry up and give it to me!" Zoe eagerly jumped up, clutching the vial of blood.
She coquettishly said, "Leonard, let''s go to the car. I want to discuss the details of the show with you.
"I want a solo camera, preferably with a spotlight. I can''t bring any of the luxury items you gave me, so let''s get the designer to match me with some regular clothes. That way, I''ll be more relatable to the audience…"
As Zoe spoke, she turned to grab Leonard''s hand.
Leonard, who had never refused her physical touch, recoiled as if shocked and spat out, "Take your stuff and get lost!"
She awkwardly withdrew her hand and sneered. "Alicia knows how to put on a show. I''m just taking a little of her blood, and she''s acting like she''s dying.
"Leonard, I understand the hopelessness of near death. If you hadn''t rushed to save me that time, I would have been dead.
"You''ve been so good to Alicia. She wouldn''t betray you for a lifetime, so why would she kill herself? She''s just an ungrateful, shameless woman. Just let her continue her act here. I wonder how long she can keep this up!"
Leonard finally looked up and examined the woman in front of him. Her eyes were filled with greed, and her face was twisted with malice.
How had he once seen Zoe as an untouchable goddess? How many times had he pushed me into the abyss to fulfill his insatiable desires?
An awful premonition lingered in his mind. "Could Alicia have already discovered the truth behind her fainting?"
He frantically flipped through the medical records, the papers rustling. He desperately hoped that he was wrong, but the last page of the file confirmed his worst fears.
It clearly read, "Leonard, I''m tired. Take this life. It''s yours now."
His fingers trembled as he traced the small words and clutched the file, desperately trying to argue, "Doctor, my wife was likely not in a clear state of mind when she signed the DNR form. In the three years after our marriage, she fainted countless times! A signature from a patient in such a state can''t be valid!"
Leonard knew full well that I was clear-headed when I signed the form, but he had already run out of options.
The doctor considered his words and reattached the ventilator.
After a while, a nurse came out with an update, "Are any family members here? The patient''s heartbeat has returned, but she''s lost a lot of blood and needs a transfusion immediately!"
Leonard grabbed the still-sleeping Zoe by the arm, his eyes sharp. "You owe Alicia! It''s time to pay up!"
"Leonard, I have to be on a show tomorrow. I''m on my period today. I faint at the sight of blood, and my weight doesn''t meet the standard. I really can''t donate any blood!"
Listening to her long string of lies, he finally realized how ridiculous he had been. With a cold expression, he instructed, "Draw 800 ml. If anything happens to her, I''ll take full responsibility."
Zoe was dragged into the emergency room, and her screams echoed throughout the building.
The following day, I was admitted to the ICU.
By then, Leonard had stayed up all night, his face pale.
The doctor handed him my phone and urged him to go home. "Mr. Gallagher, we suspect that the patient is unwilling to wake up because you''re here. We hope that you can go home and wait for news."
He closed his eyes in despair. He hadn''t expected me to abandon him one day.
